Rebels Robbed
by Nathan on 29/09/2003

The match report from Saturday's draw against Welling United.

Slough Town 1-1 Welling United

Date: 27/09/03
KO: 3:00 PM
Venue: Stag Meadow (Windsor & Eton FC)
Slough Goals: R Spencer (1-0)
Opponent Goals: Powell (1-1)
Attendance: 465

1st Half

I went into Stag Meadow expecting Slough to lose badly, but it was quite the opposite in reality! Slough were the better side throughout, but at times Slough looked as if that there were going to concede that equaliser that was inevitable.

Ryan Spencer (left) put us ahead on 21 minutes when great work from Slough resulted in the ball being played across the goalmouth for Ryan to tap in from close range.

Slough should have taken more of their chances, they would have put the game way beyond Welling if they had done. There was one point where Tony Boot found himself with the ball in space inside the area, all he had to do was chip the ball over the keeper which he did do, but it went over the bar.

2nd Half

Not much happened in the second half, Slough could have extended their lead on numerous occasions but failed to take their chances.

Three minutes from the end, Welling scored that equalising goal we all knew was coming. It started off with a blatant shove on Anthony Howard to send him off the ball, it appeared that the only three people in the entire ground who didn't see this was the linesmen and the referee. Play continued. Their forward ran past two players and hit the ball past the helpless Alan Foster.

Ian Hodges (right) was totally naccered by the end and some players had given up by the time Welling scored.

The Rebels now face a tricky replay at Park View Road, Welling on Tuesday and following today's draw, the winners will play either Hitchin Town or Folkestone Invicta away in the 3rd Qualifying Round.
