Rebels lose on the road, again!
by Nathan on 02/10/2003

A match report from tuesday's defeat at Welling United.

Welling United 4-1 Slough Town

Date: 30/09/03
KO: 7:45 PM
Venue: Park View Road (Welling United FC)
Slough Goals: M Miller (1-0)
Opponent Goals: Standen (1-1) Booth (2-1 + 3-1) Beard (4-1)
Attendance: 418

1st Half

Both teams evened each other out in the opening minutes before Matt Miller fired us ahead on 8 minutes. Danny Steer made a run down the left flank, passed it to Darron Wilkinson whose shot was well controlled by Matt Miller who wrongfooted Glen Knight and sent it the other way than the direction the keeper was diving to save the original shot.

Despite continuing to apply pressure the Rebels were unable to find a second and it took 10 minutes for Welling to find an equaliser. Paul Booth found Standen unmarked in the area; thus enabling him to fire past Alan Foster for the equalising goal.

Their second came later on when Alex Haddow failed to clear a free-kick. The miss-hit clearance fell to Paul Booth who fired past Alan Foster.

2nd Half

After the break both teams seemed not to want to win anymore. Neither team were playing as they were in the 1st half and it was Slough who were dealing with the larger share of pressure.

But it was as late as 10 minutes left when Slough finally fell to pieces. Booth capitalised on a mix-up from Foster and Bartley, he tapped the ball into the unguarded net. Before the end Welling got a fourth when Beard ran past the Slough defence and shredded Slough's FA Cup hopes for yet another season.

Ah well, now we are out of the cup and we can concentrate on the league.
