Rebels win at Leyton
by Ted on 16/01/2006

Goals from Andrew Ballard and Josias Carbon secure an unlikely victory for the Rebels at Leyton.

The Report

The odds were not in Slough's favour as they visited Leyton, the home side unbeaten in 6 league games, and Slough without the experience of Wilkinson and Hodges. And a hard match it was, but Slough came out on top thanks to a fine 90th minute winner from Josias Carbon.

After an evenly balanced opening, Slough took the lead after 15 minutes when Ballard netted following good work by Harris on the edge of the box. After this Leyton had more of the play and Slough were lucky not to concede during a frenzied goalmouth scramble. After 32 minutes Leyton did equalise, having the luck this time when a shot that Masters had covered was intercepted by Bajada's foot leaving Masters diving in the wrong direction. Although Leyton had most of the play from then on, it was Slough who came closest to scoring just before the interval when a Harris header was somehow cleared off the line with the Leyton keeper well beaten.

The second half was one of Leyton possession, denied by determined Slough defending and blocking, reminiscent of the best of last season, with Masters making some good saves. As time went on Slough fans began to hope that a draw would be gained. Not for the first time this season though Slough showed resilience more than silky skills and battled until the final whistle. Their reward? A one two between Harris and Carbon and a cracking shot to gain 3 points. After some of the flaws of earlier games, this Slough side now seems to know how to grind out some good results, and given that its a young side hopefully that's a good sign for the future.
