Christmas bought no cheer for Slough who, despite battling hard, never looked like getting anything from this game.

The visitors controlled the derby from the off, restricting Slough to two long range efforts in the entire first half, first from Michael Perrineau-Daley with an effort which for a moment looked as though it would swerve beyond the reach of the goalkeeper, and another through Abbey Nsbuga that went narrowly wide of the far post.

Having said that, Ashford were hardly bombarding the Slough goal with attacks. Only occasionally was loanee Lee Farrow required to make a save, which he did without too much trouble.

Even so, the visitors always looked them more likely to score and they did with little under 5 minutes remaining in the first half. Darron Wilkinson gave away a free kick on the left wing, which resulted in Paul Johnson's deflected shot evading Lee Farrow to put Ashford 1 up.

The second half continued in similar fashion and although the players kept at it, there was ultimately no reward and the game was put beyond Slough when Jason Chewins headed in Ricky Wellards cross with 20 minutes remaining.

The result leaves Slough nine points behind Ashford who hover just above the drop zone. This makes the games against Walton, Hendon and East Thurrock all the more important as Slough have a very difficult run-in to the end of the season, beginning with the visit of Tonbridge on 10 March.

RebelsOnline Man of the Match

It is very difficult to single out any particular player for MOTM as whilst none of them had particularly good games, they all gave 100% effort.
