Slough went down 4-0 at Horsham on Tuesday night, although the score line was perhaps a little harsh on our team who never gave up even when all hope of snatching an unlikely result had gone.

Slough, who were without captain Steve Daly and Heybridge hero George Moleski and with centre-forward Steve Hale playing at centre-back were always going to be up against it but, to their credit withstood a lot of Horsham pressure and went into the half-time break with a respectable 0-0 score.

Horsham controlled much of the first half, restricting Slough to only the occasional half-chance. Shots went horrible wide of the target and way over the crossbar for the home side, but rarely was the 'keeper forced into a save.

Horsham did have the ball in the back of the net on the half-hour, but their header was ruled out for offside.

Matt Miller also thought he had given Slough the lead when he pounced on a loose ball inside the area and fired the ball into the net, but play was stopped and bought back for a foul on the goalkeeper.

So it was 0-0 at the interval, and by the looks of things Slough had every chance of taking a point from the match.

But within 15 minutes of the restart, those hope had vanished.

Slough for the first time in the game were putting the Horsham goal under some real pressure, with Symon James having a shot blocked and Matt Miller being denied when one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The home side broke and found Lee Farrell unmarked to fire the ball into the top corner of the net.

Two minutes later the game was effectively finished when Rook hooked the ball from the far post and over the line, despite the best efforts of Doonovan to clear.

From then on, Slough managed to steady the boat without really looking like they were going to get back into the game.

Their was an incident midway through the second half between Terry Davies (who was already on a yellow card) and their goalkeeper when they went for the same ball, which the 'keeper comfortably gathered. The goalkeeper then got up, claiming he had been kicked by Davies.

The incident happened right in front of me and as it happened, Davies slide right past the goalkeeper and no contact was made. In the aftermath of players surrounding the referee, no action was taken by the referee and play was allowed to continue.

Not a lot happened between then and 2 minutes before the end, where Slough repeated what they had done at the beginning of the half and conceded two goals in two minutes. Farrell got his second of the night by firing the ball into the back of the net with the goalkeeper well beaten, the 4th when Mingle was in the right place at the right time to beat the ball way beyond the 'keeper and in the far corner of the net.
