Matt Miller - now top goalscorer

East Thurrock United 4-1 Rebels
by Ted on 24/02/2007

Matt Miller's consolation goal midway through the second half wasn't enough to inspire Slough to a miraculous recovery following a disastrous first 30 minutes.

The Rebels welcomed Burnham reserve keeper, Dennison, to the team after Jackson was recalled to Hemel Hempstead. Slough also started without Terry Davies, who was on the bench for disciplinary reasons. Slough started their second match against The Rocks in 2 weeks, the brighter of the 2 sides on a muddy pitch.

It wasn't to last however as Gabriel opened the scoring for Thurrock after 16 minutes, after a teasing cross found him near the far post. Slough nearly hit back straight away, with a shot being cleared off the line. When you are at the bottom, things rarely break your way. This was demonstrated in the 20th minute when Daly put in an excellent tackle, only for the ref to blow for a penalty, which Holding slotted home despite Dennison diving the right way. 3 minutes later Curley made it 3-0 with a scissors kick from a header back that looked a very close offside. Each side had chances as the half came to a close, but the game was already over as far as the result was concerned.

From the kick off, Slough again started the brighter of the 2 sides, with sub Davies trying to make up for lost time with a number of good runs. It was however Thurrock who scored, with another shot from Gabriel.

Miller deservedly pulled one back in the 56th minute, but that was about it, and the game fizzled slowly out, though the Slough faithful sang and enjoyed themselves until the end. A nice touch by the Rocks manager to speak to Slough fans at the end, praising them for their support at what he appreciated must be extremely difficult times---a much appreciated non league touch that you would never see in league football.
