The Report

Slough were left to rue missed chances as a late goal saw early pace-setters Gosport Borough walk away with all three points.

The first half was pretty even ,with Slough wasting what chances came their way and new goalkeeper Richard Barnard controlling his area very well. Terry Davies fired wide when one-on-one with the goalkeeper, and Leon Woodruffe missed a chance he really should have scored but apart from that, the opening 45 was non-eventful.

That was until, right at the very end of the half. Gosport forward Justin Bennett, put through on goal despite being in a clear offside position fired past Richard Barnard to put the visitors into a rather lucky lead.

However, immediately after the break, Terry Davies, put through by Danny Jefferies on the right side, waltzed past 3 defenders and fired into the far corner for brilliant reply from the Rebels.

From then on Slough were playing with confidence, with renewed vigour and looked like they believed they could win which, following the past year, was a joy to watch. Slough were all over the visitors in parts but, crucially, couldn't find the elusive goal. Terry Davies again fired wide, and Dean Harper wasted a golden opportunity by firing over the bar with only the goalie to beat.

And then the inevitable happened. The referee (who gave the Slough players little protection all day) dubious free-kick decision in which Terry Davies, down the right wing looked like he was in fact the one being fouled, went Gosport's way. One hit up the other end, one momentary lapse in concentration, one shot later and Slough were 2-1 down. Justin Bennett turned his marker and slotted the ball past Richard Barnard's far post for a very, very soft goal to concede with about 5 minutes including injury time left.

Slough battled back though, and managed to create another chance, but it was wasted by Terry Davies (who in fairness, covered every blade of grass in attack), who took too much time on the ball and allowed his marker to catch up with him.
