Despite matching their Middlesex rivals
for much of the first half and despite only trailing by 1 goal at
the interval, the Rebels capitulated during the 2nd 45 minutes and
fell to an embarrassing 4-0 defeat.
An even opening 20 minutes resulted in
both sides trading periods of pressure, without testing either
goalkeeper. Laurence Brown's shot was blocked, Danny Tilbury missed
the target from a good position following a corner for the home
side, and Yashwa Romeo's mishit shot went out for a throw-in being
the best that either side could manage.
was until former rebel Chris Robinson converted Kevin Warner's
header, despite claims that a
Slough free-kick had illegally been taken by an Uxbridge player in
the build-up to the goal.
The Rebels sought to get back into
the game but to no avail, with Byron Bubb (pictured right) wasting 2
free-kicks from promising positions. Minutes later Bubb wasted
another set piece, this time a corner that failed to beat the first
Slough's best chance of the match thus far came when Yashwa Romeo's
(pictured left) effort forced a good low save from Uxbridge 'keeper
Gary Ross. The home side were however threatening to extend their
lead, with Jamie Jackson saving Kevin Warner's shot, minutes before
Gary Ross again denied Yashwa Romeo, this time tipping his 20 yard
effort wide of the post.
Slough came out for the second half a
completely different side. They weren't chasing down balls, putting
pressure on opposition players or even communicating with each other
very well. The home side had complete dominance over the midfield,
and this paid dividends when Danny Tilbury doubled their lead after
capitalising on a very poor kick from Jackson to get the ball in off
did then force a couple of half-chances, but two Rory Smith headers
from successive corners came to nothing. Barely five minutes later,
the game was put beyond doubt when Lee Tunnell volleyed the ball
into the top corner.
It was only another 5 minutes that
separated the last Uxbridge goal from
the next, as the so-called "Rebels" stopped playing. It was Lee
Tunnell again who fired past Jamie Jackson (pictured right) having
been put through by Dave Warner.
this point it looked as though Uxbridge would run riot and run away
with the game, and that the Rebels were in for a good thrashing. But
perhaps they felt sorry for the travelling Slough fans who had to
put up with a completely clueless second half performance, as they
seemed to settle for the 4-0 win. Dave Warner saw his penalty saved
low to Jamie Jackson's left after he had been fouled by
Dean Harper inside the box.
So, at 4-0 down and the game beyond
us, Slough started to put the Uxbridge goal under a little pressure.
Dean Harper's header hit the crossbar and Gary Ross was forced to
dive well to keep out substitute Roy Gumbs' (pictured above left)
header but it was far too little far too late.
